What made you decide to get into dentistry as a career?
Since I was small I wanted to help people. Initially, I wanted to be a medical doctor but I went to work with a dentist in my school holidays and then decided that I would prefer to do dentistry.
How long have you been practising dentistry?
After completing my Bachelor's Degree in Dentistry, I worked in the Military Health Services of South Africa during 2012. From 2013 until recently, I worked at a private practice in Centurion, South Africa.
Tell us about your career background?
I have been practicing as a general dentist for the last 8 years. I have provided general dental care to a wide range of patients during this time.
What is your most memorable case to date?
I had a patient from one of the European countries that came over to South Africa for dental treatment. He was extremely scared but was embarrassed about his smile. He asked that we improve his smile. We decided to do porcelain veneers on his front teeth. After showing him the result he was ecstatic. Now he could smile with confidence.
What do you love most about your job?
The people. The patients make dentistry interesting and it gives me job satisfaction to restore a smile and to alleviate a patient's pain.
What are your special interests in dentistry?
Fixed prosthodontics. I aim to add to my skill set placement of implants in order to be able to provide patients with the option of implants from surgical to restorative phase.
What is the main piece of advice you give your patients?
Take a deep breath. Most patients find dental treatment very stressful. By having the patient focus on their breathing one can help to alleviate their fears. Deep breathing has been proven to activate the vagus nerve which results in relaxation.
Where would we find you outside of the practice?
Probably in a park with my children. As a family, we aim to spend as much time outdoors as possible.
