I’m nervous about going to the dentist, can you help?

Feeling afraid of the dentist is nothing to be worried about at Knox Dental! If you are nervous or anxious about any aspect of your treatment, we offer several remedies. We cater for even the most anxious patient and can provide:

  • Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas),
  • Intravenous Sedation
  • Ointment to numb your gum before giving you anaesthetic, or
  • We can even give you a sedative pill to take before your appointment.

What is gum disease or Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is the inflammation and loss of both the gums and the bone that supports the teeth. It is treatable but permanent loss of gums and bone is difficult to replace. The sooner it is controlled, the better.

What is root canal therapy or Endodontics?

Root Canal Therapy, root filling, or endodontics is when the nerve, or "pulp" inside the tooth is permanently damaged by decay or trauma, and is removed; then the resulting hollow canal is first medicated and sterilised, and later filled and sealed.

What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a metal "root" usually made of titanium, which is placed in the bone where teeth are missing. A ceramic tooth, made to match the existing teeth, is attached to the implant. Some implants are constructed to allow a denture to "clip" on for firm support.  Several teeth can be replaced using implants.

Should I replace a missing tooth?

Usually. The gap left between two teeth can cause those teeth to shift towards the space, opening contacts between other teeth and causing food impaction. The opposing tooth may over-erupt into the gap causing gum problems.  Stress can then be placed on the other, healthy, teeth.

Why do I need a crown (cap)?

A crown is needed on a tooth when the tooth is weakened by either decay, a fracture or a very large restoration. A tooth that has been root filled often requires a crown.

I don't like my smile, is there anything I can do about it?

Stains can be removed, old fillings replaced, then bonding, bleaching, or veneering performed.  Orthodontic Braces may be required if teeth straightening is necessary.

Why does floss shred and get caught in my teeth?

Floss can shred if the contact between the teeth is tight or there is a rough or  broken surface between the teeth. Do not worry about breaking a tooth or filling off by flossing. Floss cannot damage a healthy tooth.

How can I avoid getting cavities (holes) in my teeth?

Everyone can minimize the risk of getting cavities by:

  • Limiting sugary food and soft drinks between meals
  • Brushing with fluoridated toothpaste morning and night
  • Flossing daily
  • Visiting your dentist or hygienist regularly
  • Individually prescribed treatments

Every mouth is unique. To ensure your preventative care is optimal we recommend discussing this further with your dentist or hygienist.

What is a Hygienist?

A hygienist is a qualified and registered dental auxiliary who focuses on the prevention of tooth and gum disease. Their main role is to treat (periodontal) disease by scaling, polishing and plaque removal.

Do wisdom teeth have to be removed?

Not necessarily. If there is enough room in the mouth they will "erupt" into position uneventfully.  However, any lack of room may result in their being trapped or "impacted". This may result in infections, cysts and decay. Removal is often the only remedy. Our team will advise of the best course of treatment for you.

We look forward to seeing you at our practice and helping you feel positive about your dental health and well-being. Do not hesitate to speak with our team about any queries or concerns.
