Supporting Every Smile: Lumino The Dentists supports the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower

At Lumino The Dentists, we’re committed to creating welcoming and inclusive experiences for everyone who visits our practices. As part of the Abano Healthcare Group, we’re proud to support Abano’s participation in the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative.

The internationally recognised program helps people with non-visible disabilities discreetly signal that they may need additional support, understanding or time.

The initiative is designed to promote empathy, awareness and inclusion in everyday interactions, creating environments where people feel safe, respected and empowered.

What is a non-visible disability?

Many disabilities, conditions and health challenges are not immediately apparent. These can include autism, ADHD, hearing loss, chronic pain, anxiety, dementia, learning difficulties, epilepsy, mental health conditions and many other physical, neurological or cognitive differences.

While these disabilities may not be obvious to others, they can significantly impact a person's experience when navigating appointments, communication, waiting areas and unfamiliar environments.

The Sunflower symbol provides a simple and voluntary way for individuals to discreetly indicate that they may benefit from additional support. This aligns with how Hidden Disabilities Sunflower describes the symbol: a voluntary way to indicate a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent and that someone may need understanding, help or more time.

Why it matters in healthcare

Visiting a dental practice can be daunting for many people. For those living with a non-visible disability, the experience can present additional challenges.

By participating in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative, we're helping our teams better understand the diverse needs of our patients and creating opportunities to deliver care with greater understanding, compassion, and confidence. The initiative encourages us to pause, listen, and adapt our approach where needed, whether that means allowing extra time, providing clearer explanations, or simply offering patience and understanding.

Healthcare is about more than clinical care. It's about ensuring every person feels comfortable, respected, and supported throughout their journey.

Building a culture of inclusion

Our commitment to the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower extends beyond the patient experience.

At Abano, we recognise that some of our team members may also live with non-visible disabilities. By raising awareness and providing education, we're helping create a workplace where people feel valued for who they are and comfortable bringing their whole selves to work.

Through training, resources, and local Sunflower Champions, we are building understanding across our practices and support offices while encouraging everyday acts of allyship, empathy, and inclusion.

What being a Sunflower Friendly Practice means

Practices that choose to participate in the initiative are required to complete Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative training. Once the team is trained, they receive resources to help bring the program to life, including recognition as a Sunflower Supporting Practice.

These practices join a growing global network of organisations committed to making their environments more accessible and inclusive for everyone.
