From The Dentist’s Mouth – Dr Peter Rucastle

Dr Peter Rucastle is the lead dentist at Lumino Torbay. Originally from South Africa, Peter has a wide range of knowledge from both overseas and in New Zealand.

What made you decide to get into dentistry as a career?

After being accepted to study either medicine, engineering & dentistry, I decided dentistry based on what I was shown it involved by my girlfriend’s brother, who was studying dentistry at the time. It was then that I realised I was attracted to all the facets of dentistry, namely doctor, engineer and artist simultaneously.

How long have you been practising dentistry?

30 years.

What is your most memorable case to date?

There have been many memorable cases, but probably the most rewarding was completing my first implant case from extraction to implant placement and final restorative phase, which was a year ago.

What do you love most about your job?

I enjoy the ability to learn and evolve as a clinician, and to leave a legacy of happy patients with healthy, functional beautiful smiles.

What are your special interests in dentistry?

I especially enjoy aesthetic dentistry, endodontics, implantology and Invisalign.

What is the main piece of advice you give your patients?

The relevance of healthy lifestyles combined with regular oral maintenance on optimal overall health.

Where would we find you outside of the practice?

Living a healthy, active lifestyle training for endurance events including triathlons and Ironman’s, and enjoying all that New Zealand has to offer with my family and friends.
