From The Dentist's Mouth - Dr Sa’ane Meki

Dr Sa'ane Meki has joined the team at Lumino Manurewa, her interests include restorative Dentistry, prosthodontics and exodontia.

What made you decide to get into dentistry as a career?

I was just a small girl who just migrated from Fiji and chocolates were a common snack, so I was frequently called to the dental clinic. While I was afraid of the dentists, I found that I would walk out without the tooth pain that I had. I decided that this was a good career that could bring instant relief to those who were in. 

How long have you been practising dentistry?

I have been practicing dentistry for 2 years.

Tell us about your career background.

I began my career in Manukau where I gained valuable experience in a range of treatments. There was a high need in the population I was working with which allowed me to build up on the foundations set from dental school. 

What is your most memorable case to date?

I had a woman who had dental anxiety and lost most of her teeth. We 
managed to restore her smile with full upper and lower dentures. She couldn’t stop smiling and crying. No matter how difficult dentistry can be, I remember how life-impacting our care can be in someone’s life. 

What do you love most about your job?

Helping someone smile.

What are your special interests in dentistry?

At this stage, I am enjoying all aspects of dentistry.

What is the main piece of advice you give your patients? 

I advise them to save their teeth and keep extractions as their last option if the tooth is salvable.

Where would we find you outside of the practice?

Outside of the practice, you will find me spending time with my family- mostly with my younger siblings at the park, they keep me busy.
