What made you decide to get into dentistry as a career?
Dentistry is a great profession where I get to work with people and doing something practical at the same time.
How long have you been practising dentistry?
Tell us about your career background?
My first job was in Invercargill, then I got married and went to Singapore for 5 years. I had great bosses who really mentored me and built me up professionally. After that we returned to Dunedin where I did my postgraduate training and also had the opportunity to teach undergraduate dental students. In the past 19 years, I’ve worked in UK in both sedation and general dentistry clinics under the NHS and private.
What is your most memorable case to date?
A teenager who had a condition called amelogenesis imperfecta. Her teeth had enamel pits (like black dots). She’s teased at school and never smiled. After the completion of her full mouth rehabilitation treatment, she said she just couldn’t stop smiling.
What do you love most about your job?
The interactions with patients especially seeing the positive response of very nervous patients.
What are your special interests in dentistry?
Full mouth rehabilitation to improve aesthetics and function.
What is the main piece of advice you give your patients?
Regular visits to the dentist are much better than only visiting when there is a problem if we want our teeth for life.
Where would we find you outside of the practice?
Spending time cooking for friends and family. Searching for holiday destinations. FaceTime with my granddaughters.
