Dental Crowns

Want to complete your smile with a crown? Getting a crown can also help you improve your oral health.

Crowns are whole tooth restorations that completely surround damaged teeth or dental implants.

Many people have crowns these days. Getting a crown fitted can significantly improve the appearance of your teeth. They help enhance your smile, while also protecting and strengthening a damaged tooth.

What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns can be used to improve your smile by changing the shape and colour of your existing teeth and also in cases to help strengthen a weakened tooth which may be heavily restored due to caries or trauma.  Crowns are most commonly made from highly strengthen porcelain and also other materials such as Gold or hardened plastic.

Between the stages of preparing a tooth for a crown and placement of the final crown, a temporary crown is cemented onto your tooth to protect it.

For treatment with a crown, your dentist will usually match the existing colour of your teeth with a porcelain tooth. Sometimes people may choose a lighter colour for cosmetic reasons. For back teeth, you may choose a number of materials ranging from porcelain and gold based on the strength, durability and cosmetic goals and needs.

Crowns offer many benefits including rebuilding and strengthening weak or broken teeth. They can also help protect your teeth after root canal treatment and can also help improve your overall oral health.

Are crowns right for you?

Need to restore your smile? After a solution to protect damaged or broken teeth? Want a long-lasting, cost-effective way to restore your smile?

Crowns can help to protect your teeth. In many cases, people get a crown to protect a weak tooth, often from decay or from breaking. They can also hold together cracks in a tooth.

Here are some of the many advantages our patients have found with crowns:

  • Improved appearance - crowns can greatly improve the look of your smile
  • So convenient - crowns are a permanent and successful dental treatment
  • Improved confidence - they can help restore your smile, helping boost your self-esteem
  • Long-lasting - With proper care and maintenance, crowns have an excellent lifespan
  • Better oral health - Crowns can be used to restore broken teeth or teeth that have been worn down, which helps to improve overall oral health

Dental Crown Procedure:

A dental crown procedure typically involves two visits:

At your first visit, your dentist will numb the area and gently reshape the tooth to make space for the crown. Impressions are then taken to create a custom crown that matches your natural teeth. A temporary crown is then placed to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is being made.

Once your permanent crown is ready you’ll return for placement. This will normally take a couple of weeks. The dentist will remove the temporary crown, check the fit and colour of the permanent one, and then securely bond it to your tooth using dental cement. Minor adjustments are made to ensure a comfortable bite.

How much do dental crowns cost?

The cost of a crown can vary, depending on which type of crown is placed and which material is used. Crowns are usually made of porcelain but in some cases, your dentist may recommend an alternative material such as a gold crown because of its strength and durability. Your dentist will be able to give you an estimate at the consultation appointment once they have examined your teeth.
