From The Dentist's Mouth - Dr Claire McCormack

Dr Claire McCormack recently joined Lumino On Cambridge Christchurch City and is also working at our Lumino Darfield practice.

What made you decide to get into dentistry as a career? 
I originally become interested in dentistry after completing a work experience in a dental clinic and then gaining part time employment in the clinic during my final years of high school. I enjoyed the problem solving of creating tailored treatment plans for patients based on their concerns, oral health needs and budget. 

How long have you been practising dentistry? 
5 years.

Tell us about your career background.
I started my career in a small town in Australia called Airlie Beach. I worked there for few years before moving to the Waikato New Zealand where I worked between Hamilton, Putaruru, and Te Awamutu. I have practiced a wide range of dental procedures working in these regional and rural communities. Recently I have moved to Christchurch where I am enjoying working in the city and in Darfield.

What is your most memorable case to date?

Helping a patient who had severe dental anxiety overcome their fear, by successfully receiving dental treatment. This resulted in them becoming confident about their teeth/appearance and becoming a regular patient. 

What do you love most about your job? 
I love being able to educate patients about all things oral health to promote preventative dentistry! 

What are your special interests in dentistry? 
I enjoy all aspects of dentistry and the variety this brings. I particularly enjoy restoring teeth and reconstructing them to be as strong as possible. 

What is the main piece of advice you give your patients? 
Regular check-ups are key! The earlier any oral disease is picked up, the easier it is to treat, less chance of developing a painful toothache, and lets face it.. the less expensive it is! 

Where would we find you outside of the practice? 
In the outdoors hiking/biking, or creating new recipes in the kitchen.
