What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening or bleaching is the process of whitening your teeth. Take-home whitening treatments let you brighten your teeth in the comfort of your own home. 

In your consultation, a dentist will take impressions of your teeth for custom-made trays and book you in for a follow up appointment to pick up your custom whitening kit. Your dentist or oral health therapist will let you know how often to repeat your at-home whitening sessions to get the level of whitening you desire.

What to expect at your free whitening consultation?

At your free whitening consultation appointment, your dentist or oral therapist will be able to determine if you’re a good whitening candidate, whether you need a check- up or a hygiene clean and then will book in your appointments accordingly. The consultation for teeth whitening will be a 15 minute appointment.

Once assessed your impressions can be taken at the same appointment if eligible. Once trays are ready for pick up you will receive: trays in a retainer holder, whitening instructions, 4 x whitening syringes and a travel toothpaste.

The length of time that teeth whitening will last depends on many factors, including the lifestyle and habits that resulted in the stained teeth in the first place. Generally, it should be several years before the stains reappear to the level they were before treatment. Some whitening systems also have home touch-up kits available to top up the whiteness. This helps to enhance the whitening further and maintains your investment for longer.

Teeth whitening is safe when it's done correctly. It’s important to visit your dentist for a consultation before getting any whitening treatment so they can check if your teeth are suitable for whitening treatment. We don’t recommend ordering teeth whitening kits online and doing it yourself as you don’t know if it's safe to use, or if your teeth are suitable.

There are many causes to tooth discolouration. Some of the most common include the consumption highly coloured foods and drinks (berries, coffee, tea, red wine). Some medications, aging, smoking and trauma can also cause teeth discoloration.
