What made you decide to get into dentistry as a career?
My interest in Dental Technology began in high school after visiting a family friend’s laboratory. The hands-on nature of the work suited my learning style, sparking a passion that led me to pursue a career in dentistry.
How long have you been practising dentistry?
I have been practicing as a Clinical Dental Technician for the past 23 years.
Tell us about your career background.
I moved from Whangarei to Wellington in 1993 to study Dental Technology at the Central Institute of Technology (C.I.T), qualifying at the end of 1995. I then moved to Auckland and initially worked in crown and bridge before transitioning to removable prosthetics. I obtained an Advanced Certificate in Clinical Dental Technology, allowing me to work at various clinics across Auckland. My areas of interest include full and partial dentures, immediate dentures, and implant-retained removable overdentures.
What do you love most about your job?
I have always enjoyed the hands-on creativity of building new smiles. Applying these skills directly to my patients can be a life changing experience for many, which is incredibly rewarding.
What is the main piece of advice you give your patients?
The main piece of advice I give my patients is to maintain regular dental check-ups and proper oral hygiene. This is crucial as it helps in early detection of potential issues, ensuring long-term oral health and the longevity of their dental prosthetics.
Where would we find you outside of the practice?
Outside of dentistry, you will find me in the outdoors, fishing, snorkelling, or bodyboarding. I am a fishing addict and seize any opportunity to be out with my kids, friends, and family. Other interests include hiking, camping, snowboarding, cricket, and enjoying craft beer.
