What made you decide to get into dentistry as a career?
Falling off a bike and chipping my front teeth made me think about pursuing a career in dentistry, as I was at the dentist getting them fixed regularly through my teenage years. Thankfully seemed to have gotten past the stage of needing repairs on them.
How long have you been practising dentistry?
I have been working as a dentist for 14 years. The first year was at Christchurch Hospital and the last 13 years in private practice in Bundaberg, Queensland. Being more rural meant getting exposure to a wide variety of treatment needs as often the closest specialist was several hours away.
What is your most memorable case to date?
Cases that stand out are often people that have walked in very nervous for treatment and walked out relieved and happy to return in the future. I enjoy getting to know people and their families.
What do you love most about your job?
I really enjoy helping people smile, whether is fixing one tooth or a whole mouth. Good food is one of my passions, and a healthy mouth is so important in allowing us to enjoy.
What is the main piece of advice you give your patients?
Prevention is better than cure
Where would we find you outside of the practice?
Away from work you’ll find me with my wife and 2 kids, exploring the outdoors and restaurants that the Waikato region has to offer. Although Lake Karapiro water temperatures may take a bit to get used to after 13 years in tropical Queensland!
