Dr Helen Yoon has joined our Lumino Botany & Lumino Sanctuary practices with a special interest in fillings and prosthetic work.
What made you decide to get into dentistry as a career?
When I was in intermediate, I had quite a severe crowding problem, and was self-conscious of my smile. That was when I met Dr Tony, my orthodontist who transformed my smile. The process made me realise how important people’s smiles are, and the impact in can have in their self-image. I wanted to become like him, and give many people a chance to enjoy a better smile. I had plans to become a dentist ever since I was 15 years old.
How long have you been practising dentistry?
When I graduated from the University of Otago in 2020, I started my career as a dentist in a very busy rural practice in Balclutha. I spent a year and a half serving the community, and then returned to my roots in Auckland around mid-2022.
Tell us about your career background?
My first practice was a very busy rural practice. Other than the two family-owned practices in the middle of town, there were very few other dentists in the area. Therefore, we provided a wide range of dental care including emergency care, extractions, fillings, root canals, crowns, and dentures. I had to get familiar with the whole scope of dentistry very quickly.
When I moved back to Auckland, I worked at a busy practice in Manukau, performing many extractions and root canals, and a lovely practice in Howick providing regular check-ups, hygiene, fillings, and prosthetic work.
What is your most memorable case to date?
The most memorable cases are certainly the whole-mouth transformation cases. Extracting the unsavable teeth, restoring the others, and finally finishing off with partial dentures or bridges to replace the missing teeth. Working with the same patient for multiple appointments and finally giving them their desired smile is highly rewarding.
What do you love most about your job?
I love building a relationship with my patients, forming a bond with each person and delivering the personalised care that they need, including developing long term oral health goals together. I find watching patients’ health and hygiene improve over time under my care one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. I trust my attentive personality and humorous nature will help ensure that every patient leaves with a smile, and I am striving to reverse our preconceived “murder-house” image one patient at a time.
What are your special interests in dentistry?
I like all aspects of dentistry, and being able to provide the care that my patients need. However, my special interests lie in fillings (especially creating aesthetic fillings that blend in with the natural teeth), and prosthetic work (crown, bridges, and dentures) to provide strong restorations which are going to last a long time, and to replace missing teeth and restore a beautiful smile.
What is the main piece of advice you give your patients?
Please come for your regular check-ups and hygiene appointments! It is much easier to maintain the teeth and gums with regular dental care, and prevent any decay or gum disease from developing. If you wait for your teeth to tell you there is a problem, it may be too late for a simple fix.
Where would we find you outside of the practice?
I love all forms of arts and crafts. You’ll often find me at home enjoying drawing, painting, crocheting, or clay sculpting. It’s perfect for keeping up my fine motor skills.
In the weekends you might find me at the local pool doing laps, or strumming on my guitar or ukulele and singing.
