Smile With A Sparkle

Those with a penchant for sparkles will love the latest trend to hit New Zealand – tooth jewellery.

Inspired by social media influencer and dancer Charli D’Amelio, the red hot embellishments take traditional adornment to a whole new level. Since dazzling fans with a delicate diamond on one of her canines, Charli has triggered a new craze and Kiwi fashionistas are lapping it up.

“It has suddenly become really popular, particularly among teenage girls,” says cosmetic dentist at Lumino’s Pearl Dental, Dr Susan Church.

“I used to do a bit of tooth jewellery back in the 90s, but then it went out of fashion. Now it’s back with a vengeance thanks to Charli D’Amelio and TikTok.”

Other celebrities like Katy Perry and Pink have also helped fuel the craze, forking out thousands of dollars to have real diamonds bonded onto their teeth, and even custom-fitted jewel-encrusted grills.

But Susan says those after a bit more bling without the hefty price tag should opt for a semi-permanent crystal option, which only costs around $200 at Pearl Dental.

“The crystal is just glued to the tooth, there’s no drilling involved, it doesn’t cause any damage and we can easily remove it at a later date.”

Sounds like the perfect way to inject some celebrity status into your pearly whites this summer!
