Orthodontist (BDS MDS)

Dr Mark Johnson

Born and raised in Christchurch, Mark completed his University Studies in Otago leaving with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (1986) and a Master of Dental Surgery (1997) with distinction in Orthodontics. On completion of his Bachelor degree Mark travelled overseas working as a General Dentist in London and the Middle East. Mark’s decision to specialize in Orthodontics saw him return to Otago to complete his 3 year Masters Degree in Orthodontics.

Mark is very proud of Bay Orthodontics and his team for the warm, friendly, professional environment they have created to ensure a patient focused approach.

On weekends you will find Mark on the sidelines or involved in some way in the many sporting codes his boys play.

Mark has enjoyed a lifetime of playing hockey and continues to support the Tauranga Hockey Association. Mark is a keen fisherman and enjoys escaping for weekend hunting adventures.

Dr Justin Kearney

Justin is one of our specialist Orthodontists. Inspired by his own experience of Orthodontic treatment as a teenager, Justin is passionate about helping both kids and adults achieve healthy, beautiful smiles.

Originally from Ireland, he completed his dental training at University College Cork. He graduated with an honours degree, receiving awards from both Irish and UK dental societies for his academic and clinical work.

Whilst working in the UK, Justin completed a 3 year Masters degree in Aesthetic Dentistry at Kings College London. Following this, he earned a place on the Orthodontic specialist training pathway and graduated with a Doctorate…

Whilst working in the UK, Justin completed a 3 year Masters degree in Aesthetic Dentistry at Kings College London. Following this, he earned a place on the Orthodontic specialist training pathway and graduated with a Doctorate of Dental Sciences degree in Orthodontics from the University of Liverpool.

Justin has successfully completed Orthodontic specialist examinations at both the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. He was awarded the William Houston Gold Medal for achieving the highest mark amongst Orthodontists sitting the Royal College examinations across the UK, Australia and UAE. He also received an award from the British Orthodontic Society for the standard of his orthodontic clinical work.

In 2018, Justin made the move to New Zealand and is proud to call Tauranga his home. He is married to a Kiwi, Kimberley, and they have two young daughters. When he's not straightening teeth, you're likely to see Justin out running or spending time with his young family.

Justin provides treatment at our Tauranga, Whakatane and Rotorua rooms.

Dental Assistant (NZDAss)

Angie O'Dea

Originally from the UK, Angie married a local man, together they have 2 adult children. Angie has worked in the dental sector for over 20 years and brings considerable experience to the practice. Her great sense of humour and enthusiasm creates a fun atmosphere in the workplace.

Angie’s keen sense of adventure sees her enjoying many outdoor pursuits. One of her favourite activities is walking up and around the mount. Recently she has also taken up mountain biking. And lastly, let’s not forget to pay tribute to her penchant for shopping.

Dental Assistant (NZDAss) & Orthodontic Auxiliary (NZAO)

Matekino Tekani

Mate has worked in the Dental Industry for 11 years. Mate is a Registered Orthodontic Auxillary and enjoys being part of a fun and energetic team with a focus on patient care.

Mate is a keen netball player and has played representative touch rugby for the Manawatu. When shes not spending time with her partner and children (including her adorable grandson) you will find her running or at the gym. Our Mate is keen on creative projects and is a self confessed "Pinterest" addict!!

Dental Assistant & Lab Assistant (NZDAss)

Jessica Gillingham

Our lab technician is responsible for making patient study models and other lab work. Also working in the clinic, Jessica brings experience from working in general dentistry and orthodontics.

Married to Graydon with three busy children. She enjoys watching her children make the most of the Bay of Plenty lifestyle with various sports and interests.

Outside of work Jessica enjoys creative pursuits and the great outdoors.

Practice Manager

Debbie Carlin

Having worked in the Medical Reception field for over 20 years Debbie brings a wealth of experience to this role and enjoys her involvement with patients and their families. Debbie is responsible for the smooth running of the practice and is your “go to” person for any enquires. Debbie has been with Bay Orthodontics since 2006.

Married to Blake with four children, Debbie is a proud Australian and a keen supporter of all things netball. Outside of work you will most likely find Debbie on the sidelines of her children’s sport. If she manages to find a spare minute it would be spent socializing with friends, going up the mount or to the beach.
