Taking treatment to the people

Earlier in 2017 a team of Lumino staff along with one of the Lumino Mobile Clinics took a road trip to the remote east coast town of Wairoa to provide free dental care to the members of the Ngati Pahauwera Development Trust.

Hailing from around the country, the group of 11 Lumino dentists, hygienists, dental assistants and support staff provided 120 people with over $45,000 worth of free dental care over a two week period.

This is the third year that Lumino volunteers have provided free dental care in conjunction with the Ngati Pahauwera Trust.

It’s an initiative that Tony Dey, Lumino’s Business Development Manager, is keen to continue and develop.

“This is a great opportunity for our people to give back to those who need it most,” says Tony.

“Each year I have more of our people putting their hands up to go on this trip, it’s a special initiative to be part of and a great way for our people to put their skills to the test in an environment very different from their day to day reality.”

In previous years, tooth extractions have made up the majority of treatments however things are changing says Tony.

“Pleasingly only 20% of the treatments that took place this year were extractions; preventative hygiene and periodontal (gum) treatments were a lot more common.”

“Our hope is that through this initiative we can provide effective dental health education as well as treatment so that fewer and fewer extractions are required,” says Tony.

“We’re extremely appreciative to the Ngati Pahauwera Development Trust who make this trip possible by lining up all the appointments for their people and accommodating and feeding our team, we’re looking forward to 2018 already.”
