Quick Tips – Improving Your Dental Routine

Who really brushes their teeth for two minutes night and day? And who really sets their reminder to get their teeth checked and cleaned every six months?

Ok, so maybe dentists do! But I’ll bet that most of us don’t.

Changing your dental routine ever so slightly, may make a huge difference to your oral health. Read on for some quick tips.

  1. Brush your tongue. You’re already at the sink brushing your teeth, why not taken an extra few seconds to clean your tongue? It could significantly reduce the amount of plaque and unwanted bacteria in your mouth. Use the back of your toothbrush or a tongue scraper.

  2. Rinse before brushing. Consider swishing with water prior to brushing your teeth. A pre-brushing swish will loosen and hopefully get rid of food particles and plaque.

  3. Eat more of the good stuff. Not only will you be doing you overall health favour, but your mouth will thank you for it too. Eating more of the healthy stuff will hopefully mean eating less of the bad stuff. (Bad stuff = sugar = decay.)

  4. Change out your toothbrush. Toothbrushes wear out more quickly than you may think! Generally it’s recommend to get a new toothbrush every 3 months. Notice the bristles fraying or falling out? Time to get a new brush! Also it’s good to remember – get a new brush after having the flu or a cold.

  5. Get to know your dentist! Having a dentist you come to know and trust will make it more likely that you schedule and turn up to your appointments.
